    In an effort to conceptually top “Earth” the only option was to produce an album about the life cycle of the Universe itself. At least it started out with that intention, i.e. lyrics exploring big bang to heat death, but it gets a little more philosophical along the way considering the path mankind might take in its evolution.

    Much of the philosophical side was inspired by the short story “The Last Question” by Isaac Asimov. Our own take on the conclusion from that is embodied in the final track: Outside Time, which was the last song written for the sessions and completed only just before recording began.

In 1956 Isaac Asimov published a short story entitled “The Last Question” according to which mankind will one day develop an artificial intelligence that, in turn, designs its own successor. At some point in the
far future the consciousness that remains of humanity will merge with the intelligence to create a singular entity. That entity permeates all time and space as the Universe ages and comes to solve every problem it ever faced…except one, that being “how can the net amount of entropy in the Universe be massively decreased?”

After heat death has occurred time ceases to have any meaning and, effectively, the Cosmic entity has an eternity to solve the last question. Thus, in this state outside time it can arrive at the answer. But what will be the consequences of putting the solution into effect? Perhaps it turns out that the price of making a Universe may be destruction for its creator – which is the last experience left for an eternal being. It is also the definition of love because there can be no greater self-sacrifice than the knowing acceptance of oblivion.
